Celebrate Hauntober in Virginia City: family activities and after-dark scares
Virginia City will host Hauntober™ throughout October, featuring haunted tours, ghost hunts, parades, spooky train rides and the return of Redrun VII: The Resurrection.
“Hauntober is our way of embracing the legends and lore that make Virginia City one of the most haunted towns in America,” says Todd Tuttle, tourism director for Virginia City,. “From ghost tours and haunted carriage tours to trick-or-treating and spooky train rides, the entire month is packed with ways for visitors to experience the supernatural side of our town while experiencing our haunted past. We welcome both first-time guests and returning spirit enthusiasts to join us in celebrating the season in true Virginia City fashion.”

Featured events and highlight dates
Virginia City’s haunted history comes to life all month long with tours, rides and special events for every age. The Haunted Hills, Mills & Mansions weekend takes place Oct. 3-4, guiding visitors through some of the town’s most well-known paranormal hotspots. Spooky Off-Road Tours run throughout the month taking guests on eerie rides through the cemetery, while Voices from the Past at Silver Terrace Cemetery invites visitors to “talk to the dead” as actors from Funtime Theater portray 19th-century Comstock residents.
Family-friendly rides and daytime activities
Families can climb aboard the V&T Railroad Pumpkin Patch Train for a festive ride to the Gold Hill Pumpkin Patch. Brand new this year, the Haunted Hayride promises a 25-minute journey filled with ghost stories and haunting sights.
Redrun VII: the return of a live-action hunt on Oct. 11
Following a seven-year hiatus, Redrun VII: The Resurrection returns on Saturday, October 11. This immersive event combines elements of a run, scavenger hunt, and escape game, challenging participants to navigate haunted landmarks, solve puzzles, and overcome obstacles in a race against time. The high-energy experience transforms the town into a living game board, blending fitness, historic clues and fun. Tickets are available at liquidblueevents.com/redrun.
After-dark investigations and adult events

Halloween Week events include:
- The Spirits Made Me Do It Saloon Crawl takes place Saturday, Oct. 25, from 1-5 p.m. The adults-only event features themed drinks throughout town and a haunted scavenger hunt, where participants uncover clues and compete for prizes.
- Spirits with the Spirits at Piper’s: Nightmare on B Street follows Saturday, Oct. 25, from 6-7:30 p.m. with cocktails, curiosities and ghost stories.
- Ghost Investigation and Sleepover at St. Mary’s Art Center runs Oct. 27-29, giving participants a chance to explore the paranormal after dark.
- Haunted Halloween Graveyard Train, hosted by V&T Railroad, offers a spooky 40-minute ride to Gold Hill Graveyard on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 with multiple departure times.
- “The Victorian All Hallows” Eve Ball takes place Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Fourth Ward School Museum, featuring music, dancing, a costume contest, tarot readings and flashlight tours.
- Haunted House at Mackay Mansion opens Saturday, Oct. 25, with Gothic horror and historic legends.
- Virginia City Haunted House at the Freight Depot runs Oct. 25–31 in the evenings. The attraction is open to all ages, though young children should be cautious.
- Haunted Hayride runs Oct. 25 and 31, offering a family-friendly 25-minute ride with ghost stories and haunting sights. Tickets start at $25 for adults and $10 for children.
- Silver Terrace Cemetery After Dark is open Friday, Oct. 31, from 6-10:30 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under.
- Hauntober Costume Contest and Parade takes place Friday, Oct. 31, with costume contest check-in at 4:30 p.m. and the parade at 5 p.m., followed by Safe Trick-or-Treating along C Street from 6-8 p.m.

The Washoe Club hosts guided ghost tours every Friday and Saturday, taking guests through its historic halls where ghost sightings and unexplained phenomena have long been reported. Piper’s Opera House opens its doors for weekend paranormal investigations, allowing participants to uncover the theater’s mysterious past after dark. Guests can also book the Bats in the Belfry Guided Ghost Tour for a chilling stroll through the town’s haunted streets or test their courage at the Haunted Virginia City Escape Room and Ghost Town adventure.
